In 1849 the first Angora goats arrived in the United States. A small flock of seven Does and two Bucks were shipped from Turkey and it was from this lowly beginning that the U.S. has become one of the two major Mohair producing countries in the world - the other being South Africa.
Ninety percent of the mohair grown in the U.S. comes from Texas. The Edwards Plateau area in the Southwest part of the state is particularly suited for raising Angora goats because of the mild, dry climate and hilly, brushy terrain.
